NanoMaterials 2010

At the NanoMaterials 2010 conference in London form 8 – 10 June 2010, Dr Bojan Boskovic from Cambridge Nanomaterials Technology Ltd gave an invited talk on 10 June Carbon Nanomaterials: Synthesis and Nanocomposites Applications in the Nano Composites and Plastics session. He was also invited to contribute to the Characterisation and Metrology Workshop on the 8 June and he gave a talk Measurement and characterisation of carbon nanomaterials – an industrial and academic perspective.

The NanoMaterials2010 is a conference focused on the commercialisation of nanomaterials, rather than theoretical benefits. The conference offers an unparalleled opportunity to gain real understanding of the markets and opportunities the nanotechnology promises for those who are harnessing investment, seeking commercialisation or delivering new nanomaterials based products to the market. In order to offer the breadth of information, the conference is structured into two plenary sessions, covering general issues affecting nanomaterials today, followed by 4 parallel sessions:

  • Printed and Nanoelectronics
  • Nano Composites and Plastics
  • Coatings, Inks and Pigments
  • Clean Technology

However, the event is not limited to just these markets. Additional issues that affect the entire range of nanomaterials will also be addressed:

  • Convergence of technologies
  • Safety, health and the environment
  • Dispersion and stabilisation
  • Synthesis and processing
  • Characterisation and metrology
  • Securing venture capitalist and EU funding

NANO Magazine – Carbon Nanomaterials for Transport

The NANO Magazine is the magazine to go to for the latest updates on breakthroughs in the application of nanotechnology.  With regular interviews, country profiles, and articles on topics ranging from nanomedicine, to nanofood, to construction and many more, NANO Magazine lets you see the true impact the nano world is having on the real world.

In the June 2010 issue of the NANO Magazine Dr Bojan Boskovic from the Cambridge Nanomaterials Technology Ltd has published an invited article Carbon Nanomaterials in Transport. In this article Dr Bojan Boskovic explored the remarkable properties and fascinating applications of carbon nanotubes in aerospace and automotive industry. Carbon nanotubes when used as additives in traditional engineering materials can provide in situ “health” monitoring or aircraft or car structural components, provide weight reduction without compromising on toughness and the conductivity or carbon nanotubes can provide de-icing and lightning strike protection.

UK Nanotechnology Strategy

In a press statement from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills from 18th March 2010 is announced that the Government is today publishing a cross-departmental strategy to ensure the UK has a safe, sustainable and dynamic nanotechnologies industry. The press statement is available at News.

Lord Drayson announced that the UK would develop a Nanotechnology Strategy and launched the Government evidence gathering website on 7th July 2009. Alongside this, four Knowledge Transfer Networks (Nanotechnology, Materials, Chemistry Innovation and Sensors and Instrumentation) with significant industrial interest in nanotechnology agreed that it was necessary for industry to contribute to policy development using the bottom up approach. To do this a Mini Innovation and Growth Team was formed consisting of representatives from the four Knowledge Transfer Networks (KTNs). The KTNs then contacted leading industrialists and academics in the field of nanotechnology and formed a steering and review group (SRG) consisting of 65 representatives from the nanotechnology community.

Dr Bojan Boskovic from the Cambridge Nanomaterials Technology Ltd has contributed to the report Nanotechnology: a UK Industry View as a member of the steering and review group of the Mini Innovation and Growth Team. This report delivers a number of recommendations to the Government and Dr Bojan Boskovic is among the leading industrials and academics in the UK who endorsed this report. The UK Nanotechnology Strategy has addressed the recommendations that were made in the Business, Industry and Innovation Chapter of the report.
