The first Nano-Carbon Enhanced Materials Consortium (NCEM-1) will launch at Downing College, Cambridge on 19th May 2012. The mission of the consortium is to facilitate the commercial uptake of technologies based on nano-carbon materials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes.

Members of the consortium include: University of Cambridge (UK); Nokia Research Centre (UK); ST Microelectronics (Switzerland); International Copper Association(USA); Nexans (France); Bosch (Germany); Oxford Instruments (UK) and Codelco (Chile).

The consortium is organized by the Centre for Business Innovation (CfBI) and will be facilitated by Dr. Bojan Boskovic, an international expert in nano-carbon technologies.

Dr. Peter Hewkin, chief executive of CfBI tells us “the consortium arises from shared interests amongst member organisations to work together on certain aspects of commercialisation while keeping other parts of their work and IP separate. The NCEM-1 work programme is driven by its member organisations from around the world and designed to address key aspects of commercialisation of the fast moving nano-carbon technologies”.

Dr. Bojan Boskovic adds “exiting potential and fast moving development of many applications using carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes and graphene created urgent need to address issues such as supply chain regulation, material standardisation, health and safety and scenarios for uptake before full potential these nanotechnologies can be realised.”

The Nano Enhancers for Plastics 2012 conference will be on 20-21 March 2012 in Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Brussels, Belgium. Dr Bojan Boskovic from Cambridge Nanomaterials Technology is giving a presentation on Enhancing plastic using carbon nanomaterials on Day 2 of the conference.

Enhancing plastic using carbon nanomaterials

In a past decade a fast pace of carbon nanotube commercialisation has seen all major manufacturers scaling up their production facilities from kilograms to hundreds of tonnes per year with a number of applications constantly expanding.

It is predicted that the commercialisation of graphene might follow the same route as carbon nanotubes in the coming decade.

One of the main markets for carbon nanotubes have been their use as enhancers in plastic materials to improve electrical, mechanical and thermal properties and to add functionality and provide sensing ability.

The carbon nanotube commercialisation route from the pioneering research results and the first patents to the first applications and the scale-up will be presented with the special focus on application in enhancing plastic materials. The history of the carbon nanotube manufacturing scale-up together with the key manufactures and their position on the market will be discussed.

Similarities and differences between carbon nanotube and graphene production process and application in enhancing plastic materials will be also discussed with the aim to make possible predictions about graphene manufacturing scale-up and application in the future.

The Nano Enhancers for Plastics 2012 conference is one of the leading events in 2012 that brings together leaders from industry to talk about use of nanomaterials to enhance plastic properties and speakers from companies and institutions such as Nokia, Bayer, US Army Research Labs, and Institute of Nanotechnology among others.

Please follow the link to the conference programme for Day 2 and abstract of Dr Bojan Boskovic’s talk: http://www.nanosconference.com/nanoconferences2012/day-2

Dr Bojan Boskovic from the Cambridge Nanomaterials Technology Ltd (CNT Ltd) has given an invited talk on Commercialisation of carbon nanotubes and graphene at the Nanoentrepreneurs in East Anglia event on 11 May 2011 at the Hauser Forum in Cambridge, UK.

In a past decade a fast pace of carbon nanotube commercialisation has seen all major manufacturers scaling up their production facilities from kilograms to hundreds of tonnes per year with a number of applications constantly expanding. It is predicted that the commercialisation of graphene might follow the same route in the coming decade. The Cambridge Nanomaterials Technology through its network of associated experts is offering consulting advice and support for the government institutions, universities and companies related to all technical, IP and market related issues in the process of carbon nanomaterials commercialisation.

Taking research past development and into real cash revenues is not an easy exercise with many potential pitfalls and opportunities that present themselves to the entrepreneur and no one route to secure expanding wealth. Cambridge and its surroundings are known as one of the most innovative regions in the world and studies have shown that geographical clusters of the innovation actors such as small and medium companies, investors, intellectual property experts, technology exploitation services and mass manufacturers are crucial elements if real returns are to be made from public funded investments in the long term.

The NanoKTN, in partnership with the FP7 NanoCom project*, is convening its regular regional workshop of the NanoEntreprenuers focus group seminar at The Hauser Forum in Cambridge with the aim of fostering links and growing business opportunities to this important global hub of innovation.
